Activity: Ivermectin is effective aganist all stages of most of the major parasites including canine heartworm larvae.
It is also a potent ectoparasiticide. Its mode of action restricts its use against tapeworms and flukes.
Ivermectin acts on the parasites by effecting Gama Aminobutyric Acid (GABA) mediated signals between
nerves and muscles. flukes and tapeworms (platyhelminths) are known not to use GABA as a neurotransmitter.
Mammalian GABA engic neurones occur in the central nervous system and ivermectin dose not penetrate
mammalian blood-brain barrier and hence it has low toxicity.

For Dogs
Injection: 0.2ml/33 kg body weight
For other animal:1 ml/50 kg body weight
Side effects: Side effects are not a concern with the extremely low doses used in commercially marketed heartworm
preventives. Problems may arise when higher doses, such are those used against skin mites, are employed but
even then, side effects generally do not occur with any anti-manage doses of ivermectin excepts in animals with
genetic sensitivity. Such individuals are usually Collies, Shetland Sheepdogs, Australlian Shepherds, and Old English
sheepdogs, through some individual animals that are not members of these sensitive breeds may also be prone to
side effects marketed heartworm preventives. Heartworm preventive doses are so low that side effects are not
produced even in ivermectin sensitive individuals.
Side effects of concern are: dilated pupils and drunken gait which can progress to respiratory paralysis and death
if medication is not withdrawn and supportive care is not initiated.
